Meet the Four: The Nonconformist

May 21, 2016 By Adrienne McCue

Meet the Four: The Nonconformist

This is the four article of a nine-part series in getting to know the types.

Type Four—the Nonconformist who’s motivated by wanting to be unique and special in the world. They are the poet, the artist, the shy actor and folk singer or the designer—the best in what they do, or the most torn depressed person because they see their greatness and want to showcase it to the world.

The Fours are also known for being extremely sensitive, creative, withdrawn and tend to be one the type that can get very depressed and close off to the people they love. Because they can be most hard on themselves, they can feel flawed in their perception of themselves. They also have an elitist point of view towards others, if they feel someone is not extraordinary in some way.

The Four is also part of the heart triad of the Enneagram (Two, Three, Four).

Basic Anxiety:
The main thought for a Four is too nice to feel less than, or unnecessary or greatness.

Basic Want:
The main goal of the Four is to be the most unique and creative person in their field. This doesn’t have to be about money but can be about fame and or status.
The role of the Four is sharing their talents with the world. This can be in a creatively as an artist. Not all Fours are an artist in the general sense but have a unique flair to the world they find their selves pursuing.

How to Help the Fours
When Fours go into their unhealthy stance at Two—they can start to feel flawed, unworthy of love and showcase their sensual side—in trying to keep that high and the stance of uniqueness. Become withdrawn and fixed on self-hatred, and can move into the dream and fantasy world—trying to remove themselves from real problems and how to solve them. Depression can be the main stance at the unhealthy stance and fours often move into destructive patterns and dark thoughts as they try to numb themselves from cycle fantasies.

Remind Fours are harder on themselves than others are on them. Try to keep them motivated in the real world, and to seek out their dreams—with action, their dreams can be realized and they can be on the road to the fame and uniqueness they so often crave!

Famous Fours: Michael Jackson. Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Edward Cullen from Twilight, Johnny Deep, Marlon Brando, Kurt Cobain, James Dean, Anne Rice
